CHAPTER THREE
She tried to ignore the chill in her feet. She really did. But within a matter of seconds, Clara’s toes were numb and her teeth began to chatter.
“You are cold?” Maximilian asked, his gloved hand going to her cheek. “Of course you are! Look at how you are dressed.” He shrugged his embroidered coat off his shoulders, revealing a long-sleeved, white shirt made out of flowing fabric. His sleeves rippled in the breeze as he flung the heavy wool coat over her shoulders, and she immediately felt a bit warmer.
“It’s my f-feet,” I told him, teeth chattering. “I sort of lost my shoes.” She’d thrown one at the rat king’s head and the other she’d let go of at some point in between.
“Let me fix that for you,” he said, and to her surprise, he used both arms.
Clara forgot all about the coat. She reached forward. “Your arm! It’s not broken any longer?”
“I am fully healed,” he agreed. “What of your wounds?”
Had he realized she was hurt, too? She touched her arm tentatively, remembering the blistering. It was gone. So were the small cuts covering her feet from the broken glass. “I…I think I’m good.”
“Excellent.” He flashed her a brilliant, stunning smile. It was nothing like the nutcracker’s toothy wooden leer. Maximilian’s teeth were even, strong, and white. Actually everything about him seemed pretty darn perfect. He flexed each arm and then rolled his neck. “Human, too. Ah, but it feels incredible.”
“You look great,” she agreed, trying to tuck her feet under the wet hem of her nightgown.
“And it is all thanks to you, my boo,” he announced, and swept her into his arms. She barely had time to laugh at the ridiculous statement before he was carrying her over to a nearby rock. He set Clara gently atop it and then began to remove his boots. “I shall give you my footwear.”
“Oh, but…what about you?”
He grinned at her, so boyish and utterly human that it made her want to laugh with happiness. “I will give you my socks, then, to warm your feet, and I shall carry you back to the palace.”
“There’s a palace?”
“Indeed,” he agreed. “Did I not tell you I was a fairy prince?” He gave her a mischievous look. “Of course not. I doubt I could manage such a thing in hand squeezes.” He pulled off socks – striped red and white socks, which made her giggle – and pulled her cold foot in his lap. As he tsked over her cold toes, he gently warmed her feet by rubbing them and then put a sock on her foot. The cold immediately fell away.
“A fairy prince, huh?” Clara asked. “So is this fairy land?”
“This is the land of sweets.” He wiggled his eyebrows at her, his mood jovial. “You are quite at home here, as I find you very sweet.”
“Okay, Flirty McFlirtypants,” Clara said, laughing. “Simmer down.” But she couldn’t stop smiling either. God, everything felt so good. So utterly perfect. She was so…happy. She couldn’t remember a time she’d felt so happy.
